OMV Petrom inaugurated a new railway section within the Petrobrazi refinery. It has a length of 1,4 km and required investments of about 1,7 million euros, announced the company. Including this section, the length of the railways in service within the refinery has reached almost 50 km. Almost three quarters of the Petrobrazi railway network has been upgraded over the last 10 years. Investments for these upgrades (including maintenance) exceed 50 million euros.
“We use the rail transport for a major part of the Petrobrazi fuel production. The fuels are loaded into tank wagons inside the refinery and the Petrobrazi railroad connects to the public network. Then, the fuels are transported to our warehouses throughout the country, where they are later distributed to gas stations. In recent years, we have made great efforts to optimize this fuel route, logistically speaking. The inauguration of the new railway segment will allow us to further reduce costs, due to the reduced maneuvering times and will help to increase the operational safety”, says Neil Anthony Morgan, OMV Petrom member of directorate, responsible for the Downstream Oil activity.
The new railway section built in the coking plant area has the role of interconnecting other four existing lines, thus facilitating the way of maneuvering the trains. By streamlining traffic in the area and increasing the security of operations, we estimate that this project will have a positive impact on the local community.
More than 50.000 wagons with oil products are loaded annually at the Petrobrazi refinery.
After privatization (2005-2016), investments at the Petrobrazi refinery amounted to 1,2 billion euros, out of which about 600 million euros were invested for the modernization program that took place between 2010 and 2014.
With a refining capacity of 4,5 million tons per year, Petrobrazi can process the full oil production of OMV Petrom in Romania. The Petrobrazi Refinery currently has a Nelson1 Index of 11,5, the largest in the region, being able to process a wide range of crude oil.
