“Energy storage: pillar of a sustainable and secure energy system in the European Union” is the theme of the 13th edition of the Energy Day Brasov conference, a reference event for the renewable energy sector, which will take place on 7 and 8 February 2025, at the Radisson Blu Aurum Brasov Hotel.
REPOM, a highly experienced company providing comprehensive asset management services for owners of renewable energy power plants, is organising this year’s conference together with COALition, an international consortium running a project aimed at transforming coal regions. The strategic partner of this event, which has become a tradition in Brasov, is the Employers’ Organisation of Renewable Energy Producers – PATRES.
“Storage is crucial for Romania”, says Martin Moise, REPOM CEO & PATRES First Vice President, “Without it, we cannot move forward in the renewable energy area. […] The message that I always address to investors is that when they design a photovoltaic or wind farm, it is obligatory to put storage”.
Recent research shows that the energy storage market is on a growth trend in line with EU renewable energy directives. Romania has set a target of 4 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. At EU level, there is a pressing need for storage solutions to ensure grid stability and efficient energy use, especially in the context of the growing number of prosumers and renewable installations. The accelerated growth in renewable generation will exacerbate existing imbalances in the grid and may cause overloads and constant interruptions in electricity supply.
Energy storage is a solution to these problems, allowing:
- RES producers to adjust output to forecasts, thereby reducing balancing costs;
- Service Providers to deliver manual (mFRR) or automatic (aFRR) frequency restoration reserves;
- Reduce electricity prices by mitigating demand at morning and evening peak;
- Consumers to increase their self-consumption.
At the conference, the topic of storage will be addressed from all perspectives: technological (including availability issues), regulatory (recent developments at European and national level), commercial (including CAPEX and OPEX) and integration into existing national and international infrastructure.
Energy Day Brasov, first day of debates – 7 February
The first panel is dedicated to the strategies, policies and regulations needed to integrate energy storage into the energy system, bringing together leaders from government, industry and leading experts. Panel II focuses on solutions for integrating and financing energy storage and will bring together leading experts to address key topics for the future of energy.
Panel III will be addressed to the COALition Consortium through the organisation of round tables and technical workshops. The COALition project aims to develop a unified strategy for sustainable energy in three European regions in transition – Western Macedonia (Greece), Centre (Romania) and South-East (Bulgaria) – all classified as regions with coal-dependent economies. The initiative aims to create Regional Hubs of Excellence in each area, bringing together stakeholders through a Quadruple Helix model to set common priorities and actions to achieve the goals of a resilient and climate neutral local economy.
The second day of the conference will be dedicated to technical workshops
Workshop I – Project UMFST “George Emil Palade” from Târgu Mureș, developed within COALition, Innovation in solar energy storage and conversion based on Organic Rankine Cycle
Workshop II (running in parallel with Workshop I) – TD Partners, Financial modelling for energy storage
Workshop III – Ernst & Young and Banca Transilvania, Battery trading and BESS financing
