Europe is facing a major energy generation capacity problem, said Ondrej Safar, Country Manager of EVRYO.
“Europe has large power plants built 20 or 30 years ago that have reached the end of their life cycles. This is true in Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic. Germany has even decided to close power plants before they reach the end of their operating life. We have to replace them with something, and these replacements will have to last until 2050-2060,” Safar explained, at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.
With the 2050 target requiring every product, purchase or activity to be emission-free, the pressure on the energy sector is enormous, as this industry is responsible for a large share of pollutant emissions. EVRYO aims to be emission neutral as early as 2040, as achieving neutrality before 2050 is what will create economic value.
“The firms that can transform will be the ones that are economically sustainable and will be successful in the future,” he added.
Safar emphasized the importance of anticipating what the economy will look like in 2050, in line with climate goals.
“It is very difficult, but all of Europe is starting from the same starting point. All of Europe needs to invest to make this transformation. The winners of the energy transition will be those countries that reach maximum efficiency first and make the necessary investments in the most efficient way,” he concluded.
