Orange Romania has signed a new bilateral vPPA (virtual Power Purchase Agreement) with ENGIE Romania, which consists of the purchase of renewable energy on a long-term basis. The new agreement, concluded for a period of 10 years, will cover approximately 40 GWh of Orange’s annual electricity needs. The green energy will come from one of the wind farms owned and operated by ENGIE Romania.

ENGIE, a leading player in the production and supply of low-carbon energy, as well as related services, is a long-term partner of Orange Romania. The collaboration on this type of energy purchase began in 2023, with the signing of the first vPPA contract, which covers 30 GWh of Orange Romania’s consumption needs. It is also a reconfirmation of ENGIE’s ambition to be the best utility company focused on the energy transition, offering its customers secure, predictable, affordable and low-carbon energy.

ENGIE currently operates renewable energy production assets in Romania with a total installed capacity of 211 MW. The company owns and operates 3 wind farms with a total installed capacity of 178 MW, as well as 5 photovoltaic farms with a capacity of 33 MW, strategically located in various regions of the country. In 2024, ENGIE expanded its renewable energy production portfolio in Romania by developing its first hybrid wind and solar power plant, and is in the process of commissioning a solar power plant in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County, with a total installed capacity of 37.2 MWp. These projects contribute to achieving the goal of having an installed capacity of 1 GW of renewable energy production by 2030.

The objective of the new agreement is to ensure Orange Romania’s renewable energy needs and to support the company’s commitment to achieving the #NetCarbonZero objective by 2040, in line with the group’s strategic plan – Lead the Future. Through long-term virtual purchases of renewable energy, Orange Romania reinforces its commitment to sustainability, contributing to the increased use of green energy for its operations. In 2024, the company reached the goal of 93% of its energy consumption coming from renewable sources.

“This long-term partnership will significantly contribute to our decarbonization goals, ensuring that a substantial part of our energy needs come from renewable sources. Orange Romania actively supports the transition to green energy in the region, as part of its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By investing in green energy solutions, Orange Romania not only supports the adoption of green energy for its own operations, but also contributes to strengthening the regional energy ecosystem,” said Julien Ducarroz, CEO of Orange Romania.

The new agreement also contributes to consolidating ENGIE’s global leadership in the PPAs market. In 2024, the ENGIE Group announced the conclusion of 34 such contracts in six markets and was the only company to conclude PPAs for the three major renewable energy technologies: solar, onshore wind and offshore wind.

“We are pleased to support Orange Romania on its path towards carbon neutrality, by providing electricity produced by our renewable energy assets and by ensuring the predictability of energy costs. We want more and more companies to adopt this type of medium and long-term purchase contracts, especially in the current context of volatility, in which ensuring medium and long-term energy needs can help reduce risks related to energy prices, while contributing, at the same time, to achieving sustainability objectives”, added Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania.
