Turkish company Pomega Energy Storage Technologies, which has a production capacity of 500 MWh for battery storage systems, is studying the Romanian market, which it finds highly attractive due to energy prices, said Osman Şahin Köşker, General Manager of Pomega Energy Storage Technologies at the “Regional Approach Istanbul: Co-operation for profitable energy” conference organized by Energynomics and Enexus Renewable Energy.
“We are looking at the Romanian market because it differs somewhat from the Turkish one. In Turkey, the market is fully regulated, and due to pricing, it is not yet attractive enough for storage. But Romania is different. There is real potential there. Turkish companies could serve as suppliers of energy storage equipment for the Romanian market or as EPS suppliers. Moreover, Turkish companies can ship energy storage materials and equipment anywhere in Europe within a week,” Köşker said.
Pomega Energy Storage Technologies currently has an annual production capacity of 500 MWh, but it will soon reach 3 GWh. The market is also growing rapidly, especially in Turkey, where licenses for storage combined with photovoltaic or wind energy are increasingly being issued. So far, storage licenses with a total capacity of 5 GWh have been granted.
According to Köşker, there is currently an overcapacity in battery energy storage production, but projects have not yet fully started, mainly due to economic conditions. High-interest rates also make investors hesitant across the board.
“We want to do things a bit differently because, as you know, this business is largely dominated by Asian companies, especially Chinese ones. So we thought about how to create an alternative supply chain to deliver to Europe and Turkey,” he added.
