Starting Monday, August 27, 2018, the Paroşeni Thermal Power Plant operates in accordance with the environmental values imposed by European legislation, the Energy Ministry has announced. After an investment of 65.3 million euros, the Paroşeni thermal power plant was equipped with a desulphurization plant that eliminates 94% of the SO2 emissions.

“We are glad that we have the first power plant in CE Hunedoara in accordance with the European environmental legislation. This is of dual importance. On the one hand, the Paroşeni thermal power plant will be supplied with coal from the Jiu Valley, and on the other hand, any step taken towards meeting the environmental requirements by coal-fired power plants in Romania will ensure in the future an equally diverse energy mix”, says Energy Minister Anton Anton.

The investment was financed by a loan from the EIB, BCR and the EBRD, and the works were executed by the CNIM-LAB consortium.

Paroșeni thermal power plant has an installed capacity of 150 MW.

CE Hunedoara was established in 2011 by the merger of Electrocentrale Deva, Electrocentrale Paroșeni and the Compania Națională a Huilei. Besides the Paroșeni Group, CEH also has five production groups at Mintia, with an installed capacity of 1,075 MW. On Transelectrica’s website, on June 1, all five units were “in the process of being authorized” for an environmental permit.

In 2017, CEH recorded a loss of 768 million lei, with a turnover of 433 million lei. It was the fifth consecutive year of loss for the complex, for a total of almost 3.8 billion lei, since 2013. The number of employees reached 5797, compared to a peak of 6672, reported in 2014.
