Photon Energy launches a new 7 MW solar project and announces that it will reach a total capacity of 32 MW by the end of the year in Romania.

Photon’s seventh photovoltaic plant in Romania, with a capacity of 7.1 MW, is located near Săhăteni and is expected to generate around 11.4 GWh of renewable energy per year.

In addition to the company’s first six Romanian power plants, currently built near Șiria, Aiud, Calafat and Teiuș, the Săhăteni plant brings the total capacity under construction in Romania to 28.3 MWp.

Upon completion, the new Săhăteni plant will expand Photon Energy’s global independent power producer portfolio to 95 power plants, with a combined production capacity of 120 MWp. Of this, a total capacity of 104 MWp will be represented by the sale of clean electricity directly on the market.

Located near the town of Săhăteni in Buzău county, the last power plant will cover over 10 ha of arable land and will include 12,700 solar panels.

The high-efficiency bifacial solar modules mounted on single-axis trackers will provide approximately 11.4 GWh of renewable energy annually to the SDEE Electrica Muntenia Nord network. The electricity produced will be sold on the energy market on a merchant basis, without any government support or a power purchase agreement with a power supplier. The new power plant is to start operation in the fourth quarter of 2022.

“We are very happy with the progress made in Romania, one of the main markets in Central and Eastern Europe, implementing the growth strategy announced in the Financial Report for 2022,” said Georg Hotar, CEO of Photon Energy Group.

“The Săhăteni plant marks another important step in our efforts to bring a total capacity of around 32 MWp into operation in Romania by the end of 2022. These new assets alone will expand the IPP portfolio to over 120 MWp by the end of the year.”

The company is currently developing photovoltaic projects in Romania with a total capacity of 242.8 MWp, with a total of 28.3 MWp under construction, including the Săhăteni facility. About 3.6 MWp is currently in the preparatory phase for construction.

Including the projects in Romania, the company has a combined capacity of 892 MWp under development in its key markets of CEE and Australia. The next planned development projects in Romania are to be built and commissioned in 2023 and 2024, and the Romanian market will significantly contribute to the company’s goal of expanding its IPP portfolio to at least 600 MWp globally by the end of 2024.
