Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Wednesday urged the European Union (EU) to introduce a tax on hydrocarbon imports from Russia, AFP reports.

“I urge the European Commission today to set a tax on Russian hydrocarbons so that economic rules and trade in the European single market can work fairly,” Morawiecki said, according to Agerpres.

He announced that Poland hopes to get rid of its dependence on Russian coal imports in a month or two and of oil and gas imports – by the end of this year.

Recalling that some European countries, including Germany, are reluctant to give up imports of Russian raw materials and that they could be sold at a relatively low, competitive price, Morawiecki said the tax in question would be aimed at “equalizing prices of energy across the EU.”

“I will push hard for this idea in the EU, so that the situation is fair in terms of market competition principles,” Morawiecki told a news conference.
