Primary energy consumption increased in 20 Member States in 2017 as compared to the previous year, with the largest increases being recorded in Malta (+ 12.9%), Romania (+ 5.7%) and Spain (+ 5.4% ), according to European Commission data.
Estonia recorded the largest year-on-year decline (-4.2%) versus 2016, followed by the United Kingdom (-1.6%) and Ireland (-1.4%).
Primary energy consumption in EU member states increased by 0.9% in 2017 compared to 2016. Final energy consumption increased by 1.1% in 2017, according to investenergy.ro. Following a gradual decline in 2007-2014, energy consumption increased between 2014 and 2017. Currently, both are slightly above the 2020 target.
