Romanian prosumers could have 5 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2030, although many investors seeking EU or state co-financing have lost patience.

“Realistically, it is possible to have 5 GW installed at prosumers by 2030, compared to the current level of 1 GW related to about 86,000 existing prosumers. The problem is that 8-10% of those applying for funds have lost patience and are financing their own investments. This is good because the need is there”, said Dan Bold, Business Development Manager at REI Grup, during the “More renewables for Romania” conference, organized by Energynomics.

The renewable energy market is facing a delay in the approval of European or Romanian government funding and this is leading beneficiaries to look for alternative financing solutions.

For this reason, many investors and developers are very reluctant to go ahead with projects.

One of the things the Ministry of Energy could do to streamline the process of project analysis and approval would be to hire consultants or even outsource this service. Simplifying legislation would also help.

At the same time, efforts to approve renewable energy projects must be synchronised with work to reinforce electricity grids and balance energy production and consumption.

However, the high flow of green energy is affecting the equipment market and putting pressure on designers because of the low number of engineering design companies.

“A lot of installation companies have come forward, but when the projects are finally approved, the actual implementation of these projects will be needed. There is a shortage of design engineers and workers,” Bold said.
