The next business opportunity in the Romanian energy sector will be congestion management, voltage control, and micro grid management, driven by the rise of renewable energy sources, stated Raul Toma, Managing Partner at EVOLVE Energy Management Solutions.

“We are very focused on what will be the next business opportunity in Romania, such as flexibility for the TSOs, which means congestion management and voltage control. Additionally, microgrid management is closely connected with future energy communities,” he added at the “Regional Approach Istanbul: Co-operation for profitable energy” conference organized by Energynomics and Enexus Renewable Energy.

Raul Toma mentioned the latest developments in the regulatory framework in Romania, with more than 10 changes considered relevant in areas like new connection regulation, contracts for differences – CfDs, or new balancing rules. He then presented the BESS model as developed by Evolve, based on which the team worked on several scenarios of having  batteries in specific markets and usage cases.

“The need for system services will increase in proportion to the installed RES capacities over the 2030-2050 horizon”, highlighted Raul Toma, and „BESS are to be considered with multiple revenue sources among which system services, imbalance compensation, arbitrage.” He also mentioned that at present the main competitor in the system services market is Hidroelectrica, but competition is expected to increase as more and more BESS will be installed. At the same time, hybridization of RES parks will limit the need for system services as imbalance compensation will be done at source.
