Romania and Moldova need to better align their joint projects to avoid the risk of inefficient investments and ensure a more coherent energy transition. The two countries should cooperate closely and not pursue different directions in order to optimize resources and efforts in the energy sector, said energy expert Corina Popescu.

“There needs to be better alignment between what is happening on the left and right of the Prut. Romania and Moldova should align themselves and not run in different directions, because there is a risk that some investments will be inefficient. The main challenge for the Republic of Moldova in the next year and a half will be to succeed in capacity building at the level of operating companies and to have well-trained energy professionals,” she said at the conference Regional Approach: Chisinau 2024, organised by Energynomics.

Popescu added that this alignment is necessary for a fast and efficient realization of joint energy projects. She mentioned the need to build at least two electricity interconnection lines, namely Suceava-Balti and Strășeni-Gutinaș.

“Some steps need to be taken and dysfunctions eliminated. Moldova’s efforts have been considerable and started a long time ago. In order to benefit from energy security, Moldova has to assume everything that will come from now on,” she added.

Popescu said that the Republic of Moldova can avoid rising energy costs for consumers by using non-reimbursable funds.

“Nobody wants higher costs for end consumers and that is what the non-reimbursable funds can be used for. In the context of the energy transition, we have to keep in mind not to destroy the European industry and not to put too much pressure on the final consumer. Everything has to be efficient to minimize the impact on the bill”, she explained.
