The UK and Romania have strong economic ties, with bilateral trade surpassing 10 billion pounds for the first time last year. While the UK is already a top investor in Romania, there is potential for even greater collaboration, particularly in the energy sector. The British Embassy sees energy, specially green energy and energy security, as a key area for further cooperation and support, said H.E. Giles Portman, HM British Ambassador to Romania.
“I think Romania and the UK form a natural partnership in the energy sector”, the ambassador said at the conference “International Approach: Catalyzing Romania’s energy future”, organised by Energynomics in London.
“Romania is already a regional leader in the energy transition, with record investments in hydro, wind, and solar energy. There is huge potential, but also significant progress already being made. I also want to commend the Romanian government for its role in ensuring regional energy security, particularly its support for Moldova at such a crucial time.”
According to Ambassador Giles Portman, the nuclear sector is another area where the UK could be a reliable partner for Romania. Both Romania and the UK have committed to ambitious net-zero targets and need even more entrepreneurialism and investment in new energy technologies to achieve this goal. On the other hand, the war in Ukraine has made it clear that excessive dependence on external energy sources is not safe. “We’ve made incredible progress in correcting that,” he highlighted.
This year, the British government aims to reset its relationship with the European Union, and both entities must cooperate in areas such as energy infrastructure, energy security, and energy pricing. Additionally, considering the new administration in the US, Europe will have to take greater responsibility for its own defense and security.
“That is going to cost us money, and once again, we will need to generate that money through renewed economic growth, with the energy sector being one of the key areas to achieve that. My key message is that the British Embassy is at your disposal. We’re here to help you. It is a priority for us, so don’t hesitate to reach out for advice and support—that’s what we’re here for,” the ambassador concluded.
