Romania has the potential to produce batteries at a more competitive cost than in Asia, given the high demand that exceeds available production capacity, said Vicențiu Ciobanu, CEO of Prime Batteries Technology.
“Demand is much higher than the current production capacity, and Prime Batteries has an important role to play in meeting this demand, with projects targeting dozens of GWh in Romania,” Ciobanu said at the conference “Stepping stones for the BESS technologies development”, organised by Energynomics.
By 2024, Prime Batteries had been deployed in 74 countries, and Romania has demonstrated significant maturity in terms of product experience and acceptance. On project progress, Ciobanu noted that by 2025, there are 860 MWh of ‘ready to build’ projects to be deployed, and in Europe, approximately 900 MWh of projects are planned for deployment.
“Investors developing battery projects for the local market emphasise long-term availability and efficiency, and Romania has pleasantly surprised us by its willingness to invest in this sector,” he added.
Prime Batteries has also recently finalised investments to expand production capacity by 2 GW and has implemented two new electrode technologies, which will go into production in the second quarter of this year. Ciobanu emphasised that the innovative technologies used by the company, such as ceramic separators and activated carbon, are helping to improve safety and increase efficiency, given that storage batteries can pose fire hazards in the event of overuse.
“It is essential that air conditioning installations are made by experienced manufacturers to control temperature and prevent fire risks,” Mr Ciobanu concluded.
