The data center construction market has seen 300% growth worldwide and continues to expand, and Romania, with its diverse energy mix, could power a large data center. For now, however, it remains less attractive for big players due to geopolitical and geographic factors, said Lucian Enaru, CEO of Schneider Electric.

“Romania could attract investment in the data center sector, given the energy resources available,” Enaru said at the Energy Strategy Summit 2024, organized by Energynomics.

In addition, the home automation sector has significant growth potential as most Romanians own their homes and there is a growing interest in zero-carbon buildings.

Also, the increase in the number of prosumers, who have installed solar panels with a total capacity of 1.5 GW nationwide, has led to an increased need for the deployment of smart solutions for the management and maintenance of energy distribution grids.

However, the speed of implementation of renewable energy projects is hampered by bureaucracy and resource availability, challenges that exist all over the world and that cannot be controlled from Romania. However, a positive point is the access to state-of-the-art technologies, which are already in various stages of implementation in the country.
