Romania is in a favorable situation for investments in the production of energy from renewable sources as there are multiple sources of project financing, and the interest from consumers is extremely high, said Sergiu Bazarciuc, COO & Co-founder of the Simtel engineering company.
“For six years, Romania has not installed any large unit of energy production from photovoltaic sources. On wind we are even worse off, because it seems that some capacities have actually gone off the charts. There is a lot of room for growth, but I think we are in a favorable situation now. All the crises we go through also come with opportunities,” said Bazarciuc, during the conference “New wave of renewables”, organized by Energynomics.
In 2021, globally, 830 GW were installed in photovoltaic units and 770 GW in wind turbines. In Romania, at the end of last year there were photovoltaic plants with a cumulative power of 1.39 GW, compared to 1.32 GW in 2015. Wind turbines operating in Romania last year had a cumulative installed capacity of 3 GW, down from 3, 24 GW in 2014, according to data provided by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
According to Bazarciuc, it is possible that in the coming years the interest of investors in the production of onshore wind energy will grow steadily, considering the generosity of the support schemes granted by the European Union to this field.
From Simtel’s perspective, in order for the renewable energy sector to develop on the Romanian market, a “clear and simple” legislation is needed, as well as investments in the electricity transmission network. At the same time, Romanian companies that provide services in this industry and that plan to invest in the production of equipment and components locally should be encouraged. According to Bazarciuc, the labor shortage in the sector could be compensated by retraining some unemployed people.
