Romania finds itself in the midst of a political crisis as the whole world is going through a global crisis whose effects are already being felt, said Corneliu Bodea, president of the Romanian Energy Centre, at the conference “Romanian Energy Market – Facts of 2025”.
“How does this global crisis find us? It finds us in a political crisis. We hope things will change for the better. Now it seems that the government has become the favourite target of protesters. Let’s see how well it will hold up, because that’s all we need now, before the elections, to lose the government and have someone else come in to confirm or not the policies adopted by the current government,” said Mr Bodea.
He added that in this new global context we are seeing large investment funds in the United States correcting their investment policy in renewable energy, and a sudden change of direction in the United States: from being a supporter of renewable energy to supporting drilling for oil.
“[The new positioning of] the US administration is a reality that we have to take into account. It will certainly produce effects and we are already feeling those effects,” he continued.
Then, following talks between the US and Russia over the war in Ukraine, we can expect Russia to become a gas supplier again.
“Is this good news? What will happen to prices on this? What will be the European Union’s reaction? I believe that the European Union has achieved something extraordinary and we should be grateful for that, and that is to wean itself, at great cost, from dependence on Russia. At the same time, the conflict in the Middle East is a reality that could inflate oil prices,” Mr Bodea warned.
