The Black Sea power cable project between Romania and Turkey will not be found in the future energy strategy of Romania, as Turkey is no longer interested in the project, said Corina Popescu, Secretary of State for Energy.

“I do not believe in the sea cable project. That is not a (politically – e.n.) stable area at present. In addition, being a project involving several countries, there must be interest on both sides. Turks have no interest in this project … I do not think Turkey will allocate money for this project,” said Corina Popescu.

According to her, the project included crossing the Bulgarian territorial waters, which would have made it more difficult to achieve. “This project will not be found, perhaps, in the energy strategy”, she said, quoted by Agerpres.

In January 2014, the Minister for Energy at the time, Constantin Nita and the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Taner Yildiz signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the development of interconnections of electricity, which could have create an alternative facility for the exchange of electricity between the two countries, including via a submarine cable, according to a press release from the Ministry of Energy.

Some analysts have complained about the futility of such a project, as Turkey is building its own nuclear power plants.
