Germany’s imports and exports with Romania last year amounted to EUR 33 billion, AHK Romania reports. With an increase of 12.3% compared to 2020, the volume of trade exceeded even the pre-crisis level. Thus, imports reached EUR 14.8 billion (+ 8.7%), while exports to Romania increased to EUR 18.3 billion (+15.4%). Germany remains on the first place in the ranking of Romania’s trading partners, and Romania on the 19th place in the top of Germany’s trading partners, according to the preliminary results published by Destatis.

Since 2006, Germany has been Romania’s most important trading partner.

“To be no. 1 so long means something. In the last 20 years, a lot has happened in Romania – the country has been transformed from a simple investment site into a location for innovation. Thus, the added value of German companies in Romania increased significantly. This is also clear from the development of the trade structure,” says Sebastian Metz, General Manager and member of the Board of Directors of AHK Romania.

“While clothing and textiles still played an important role in Romania’s exports to Germany in 2007, this product group is becoming less and less important since 2017, instead more goods are exported from optical product groups and medical technology. But this can be seen most clearly when we look at the structure of German companies and their business activities.

“More and more German companies are setting up research and development centers in Romania. Romania as a market has also registered a positive evolution. Growing disposable revenues, investments in expanding public infrastructure, including with the help of considerable European funds available to the country, as well as increasing investments in equipment and technology parks of national companies make Romania an attractive market for German companies,” said Metz.
