Hungary achieves success in modernizing the niche sector by building its new industrial atomic station, seen as a momentous decision for Hungary. The nuclear industry of Romania encourages this project, announces the official statement of ROMATOM (Association of Romanian Atomic Forum) that includes 30 companies and active NGOs in this domanin. The atomic station planned to be built at Paks will have two reactors and is designed to replace two nuclear units that is anticipated to stop functioning between 2032 and 2037.

During 2014 Hungary has signed an undertaking, building and mounting contract for the Paks atomic station, but the project has drawn great attention to European Commission. In the last term of 2015 the community executive started an investigation referred to a possible state aid, launching a public advising procedure opened during 12th of January – 12th of February period of 2016, reminds ROMATOM.

“As a response to European Commission’s aim of 40% decrease of the greenhouse effect, the nuclear industry of Romania, interfering with European one, is entirely consciously of the need of the investment program which is intended to replace the old low-efficient and pollutant methods of production. The energy system mix ought to be a balanced decision that should outline the diversity and technology neutrality as a considerable role for the EU aims attainment – national and regional energy security, decrease of the carbon emissions, maintaining the energy price accessible to people. ROMATOM supports development of the new nuclear units from Paks II and will continue in the same way for the whole new European atomic plants that are willing to use safe, reliable and verified nuclear technologies”, said Marius Gheorghiu, General Director of ELCOMEX IEA and ROMATOM President.

The association announces that ROMATOM sent on 12th of February to European Commission a standpoint that supports the right of the Union Members to choose the right energy mix which can attain the decarburizing target. The two reactors Hungary is planning to have aims to cover the decrease of carbon emissions combined with large use of the renewable energy sources, ensuring energy security, national GDP increase, regional economic grow, new jobs on the market, preservation and transfer of specific nuclear industrial knowledge, source the official ROMATOM statement.

The European Parliament Resolution of December 2015 concludes that „the nuclear energy of 2014 represents 27% of the total European energy mix, ensuring over a half of the whole energy with reduced carbon emissions.” says also that „130 of 132 atomic plants of EU will be decommissioning until 2050, inducing a big basic energy gap with reduced carbon emissions in the European energy mix.”

The resolution acknowledges that “European Union members choose to give up on nuclear energy, whereas other states take in count building new atomic plants for attaining European objectives related to climate and energy”, requiring from the Commission the specific circumstance conforming the market and competition standards, allowing the member states to build nuclear stations by desire.

ROMATOM was established in 2001, on 10th of January, when 14 companies, both private and public ones, added also by two NGO associations, decided to create the Romanian Atomic Forum. Currently ROMATOM counts over 30 members. The association has the right to promote peaceful nuclear energy use in Romania, sustaining the national program of nuclear energy, as well as coordination of the assumed activities by participating at European Atomic Forum (FORATOM).
