Last year, Romania recorded the highest newly installed electricity generation capacity in the country at 1.7 GW, of which 1.1 GW was prosumers. Currently, 1.7 GW of PV capacity is in various stages of construction, and this year we expect to surpass the 1 GW threshold in large PV parks, said Irene Mihai, Policy Officer at RPIA, at the conference “Romanian Energy Market – Facts of 2025”.

“This demonstrates both that Romania knows what it has to do and that there is significant investment appetite in the market. Thus, the development of the sector will no longer be supported exclusively by prosumers,” Mihai said. “However, it is essential to have support for grid connection, as this is where we face the biggest bottlenecks,” insisted the representative of the Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association.

At the same time, the Romanian energy market needs to return to its competitive fundamentals. Renewable energy, in particular photovoltaics, plays a crucial role in the transition from a regulated to a competitive market, contributing to lower energy prices. The more PV parks are installed, the lower final electricity prices will be.

“We are increasingly hearing voices challenging the Green Deal, but its results are visible. It is probably the most transformative change the EU has seen, the EU’s solar fleet has doubled in just two years and the transition to a sustainable economy has become irreversible,” he added.

In 2024, the European Union saw the biggest annual increase in installed capacity for any energy source, adding 66 GW of photovoltaics. Solar covered 11% of the Union’s energy needs, producing 304 TWh, while coal fell to sixth place in terms of production.
