Russia’s Defense Ministry on Thursday published a map of countries that could be affected by radiation if 25 percent of the radioactive content of a nuclear reactor in Zaporozhye is removed. There have been several explosions in the area of the plant in recent days, and Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of provocations. In fact, even today Russia officially refused a possible demilitarization of the area, requested by the Secretary General of the UN.
In the scenario presented by the Russians, quoted by Ria Novosti, the radioactive cloud would completely cover the Republic of Moldova, half of Romania and parts of Belarus, Slovakia, Germany and Poland.
Russian specialists from the Ministry of Defense blame Kiev for the military actions in the area of the Zaporozhye plant and threaten that “a similar situation may arise” as in Chernobyl. The Russians claim that if the backup generators fail, in an “extraordinary” situation, the reactor will overheat and “The destruction of the reactor facilities in Europe’s largest plant would lead to the release into the atmosphere of radioactive substances that – it would spread over hundreds of kilometers”, according to Digi 24.
The spokesman of the Russian ministry also spoke about the catastrophic consequences of an explosion at the Zaporizhia power plant: “Such an extraordinary situation will lead to a mass migration of the population and will have much more catastrophic consequences than the approaching energy crisis.”
