The Republic of Moldova has made “remarkable progress” in the field of renewable energy, generating 282 million kWh in 2023, an increase of 44% compared to the previous year, said Veaceslav Untila, director of the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) of the Republic of Moldova.”We have a positive dynamic of the Moldovan energy sector, which has undergone major transformations in the last two years. The liberalization and development of the natural gas market are essential for the integration of the Moldovan market into regional markets,” he said at the conference Regional Approach: Chisinau 2024, organised by Energynomics.

The Moldovan authorities have managed to provide consumers with the energy they need, despite significant changes in the sector. At the same time, the authorities are focusing on protecting consumers from possible shocks on the gas market.

According to Untila, Romania is seen in Chisinau as a potential gas supplier for Moldova, thanks to its deposits in the Black Sea. Romania is also seen as a reliable partner in Moldova’s efforts to join the vertical corridor, which would allow natural gas to be transported from Greece to Moldova and stored in gas depots in Ukraine. This partnership would strengthen Moldova’s energy security and facilitate its integration into the European energy market.
