The Romanian Leu recovers, following the repeal of Ordinance 13

The Romanian Leu recovered strongly on Monday, February 6th, following the weekend decision of the government to repeal Ordinance 13, which amended the criminal legislation. The adoption of the ordinance caused extensive street protests over last week and has been heavily criticized by the international business community, with a harmful effect upon the leu-euro exchange rate.

Thus, the Romanian Leu increased on Monday at 4,5095 units per euro, down by 0.1% from the level in the previous session, the Romanian Leu taking advantage of the regional trend, of appreciation of the regional currencies against the euro, say analysts quoted by news.ro. On Wednesday the national currency reached on the currency market at quotations of 4,55 lei/euro.

In the region, the Zlot and the Forint, currencies with similar regime of the Romanian currency, appreciated on Monday against the euro.

US dollar indirectly quoted on the Romanian market by reference to the euro/dollar parity, depreciated from 4,2033 to 4,1994 lei lei.

The US dollar is the reference currency internationally for raw materials, including oil and the imports from Asia also depend on the US currency.

However, the Swiss franc fell from 4,2188 to 4,2182 lei lei.
