Think Blu Solution is developing 1 GW of renewable energy projects in various regions of Romania, said Cosmin Cheran, General Manager of the company, emphasising the significant progress of the projects under development. “Today we are at the level where all the approvals are taken, the DTACs (Technical Documentation for Obtaining Construction Authorisation) are ready, we are preparing this month to submit the solution studies to the system operator,” Cheran explained at the conference “Stepping stones for the BESS technologies development”, organised by Energynomics.
The Think Blu Solution manager emphasised that the battery market in Romania is growing, but at a slow pace. “We see an increase in projects coming towards the ‘ready-to-build’ phase, but the steps that are being taken are not very big. We already have a mature market on the photovoltaics side, and investor appetite is growing,” he said.
One crucial aspect addressed by Cheran is the role of energy storage units. “Batteries will become essential for both trading partners and end consumers. Without batteries, no PV system will have a long life,” he said.
Manager Think Blu Solution expects this summer to bring an overproduction of photovoltaics, which will lead to many low-priced time slots. This trend comes against the backdrop that although the government has extended the cap on electricity tariffs, market prices have already started to rise. “You can see in the market that energy suppliers are starting to adjust prices, and batteries will be the solution to balance the market,” Cheran explained.
Legislative challenges remain a major obstacle
Although the renewable energy sector in Romania is evolving, legislative bottlenecks continue to hold back project development. “The biggest challenges are legislative. There are differences of vision between departments of the same system operator, and these bottlenecks make it very difficult for us to move forward,” Cheran said. “We face different approaches from one branch to another, which affects us and creates frustration among investors.”
Think Blu Solution is also looking at expanding into the energy distribution sector. “We are thinking very seriously about attacking the distribution side, developing stations for operators in this sector,” he said.
The company is not stopping there and plans to develop a new gigawatt of renewable energy in different parts of the country. “We have at an early stage another 1 GW in several regions in Romania,” Cheran said, emphasising that the Romanian renewable energy market is on an upward trend, with growing interest from investors.
The aim is to give them expertise “in developing integrated projects, including energy storage solutions”, he concluded.
