Transelectrica SA has started work on two strategic investments: the construction of the 400 kV Stâlpu Power Station and the modernisation of the 110 kV and medium voltage cells within the same station. The execution contract, signed recently, marks the beginning of a project worth approximately 95 million lei, with a completion date of January 2027.

During the first meeting between the Transelectrica management and representatives of Electromontaj SA, the appointed contractor, the implementation details of the project were established. The event also included a visit to the 220/110/20 kV Stâlpu Electrical Transformer Station, located in Buzău County, which has been in operation since 1977 and needs to be upgraded to adapt it to the current requirements of the National Electricity System (SEN).

The Chairman of Transelectrica’s Board of Directors, Ștefăniță Munteanu, underlined the importance of the project for the efficient evacuation of renewable energy produced in the south-east of the country and for the interconnection of this area with Transylvania: “Prioritising the completion of the investment in the Stâlpu Station is essential for the development of the national electricity grid and for Romania’s energy security in the context of the energy transition.”

The new 400 kV Stâlpu station will allow the integration of the 400 kV Cernavodă – Stâlpu overhead power line, currently connected to the Gura Ialomiței station, and the connection of the Brazi Vest – Teleajen – Stâlpu axis, currently being upgraded to 400 kV. These modernisations will improve the security of supply to consumers, network efficiency, reduce energy losses and CO₂ emissions.

The investment is part of Transelectrica’s 2024-2033 Transmission Grid Development Plan, approved by ANRE, which allocates 2.9 billion lei for the modernisation of electrical installations, out of a total budget of 9.4 billion lei. Along with the security of supply to consumers, the main priorities of this plan include the integration of renewable energy production and increasing the interconnection capacity of the national grid with those of neighbouring countries.
