Transelectrica has started the construction of the 400 kV Constanța Nord – Medgidia Sud overhead power line, a large-scale project worth 134 million lei, designed to strengthen the transmission grid in Dobrogea. Most of the financing comes from the Modernisation Fund, which is contributing 111 million lei. The works will be carried out by the Electromontaj SA – Elm Electromontaj Cluj SA joint venture, under the management of Electromontaj SA, and the execution period is 30 months.

Transelectrica’s investment team, led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ștefăniță Munteanu, set the project’s key action directions and deadlines in a working meeting with representatives of the contractors. The new power line will play a key role in eliminating grid congestion in Dobrogea and will enable the connection of new renewable power plants in the near future. Mr Ștefăniță Munteanu emphasised that the investment is part of a wider Transelectrica strategy for the region, alongside projects such as the Cernavodă-Stâlpu and Gutinaș-Smârdan power lines, aimed at increasing the evacuation capacity of electricity produced from renewable sources.

According to the feasibility study, the 400 kV overhead power line will allow for the capture and transmission of at least 273 MW of additional renewable energy capacity. This additional capacity will contribute to balancing and stabilising the national power system, given that Dobrogea is a region with a considerable surplus of energy production.

The investment involves the construction of a new power line with a total length of 37.35 kilometres, divided into two main sections. The first of these consists of a 400 kV overhead power line, mounted on double-circuit metal poles, with a length of approximately 35.35 kilometres. The second section, about 2 kilometres long, will be built underground, connecting the overhead segment of the line to the Medgidia Sud station.

Through the implementation of this project, Transelectrica aims to develop the energy infrastructure in Dobrogea and to achieve key strategic objectives. These include increasing the evacuation capacity of the energy produced in the new wind and conventional power plants in the area, ensuring a secure and efficient power supply for consumers in Constanța, the Black Sea coast and Tulcea County, strengthening the interconnection between the transmission and distribution grids and optimising transmission costs by reducing power losses.
