Transgaz and E.ON Romania signed on Thursday, April 20, in Bucharest, a “Memorandum of Understanding” by which they propose to work closely to strengthen Romania’s energy security, by aligning and correlating the development strategies of the natural gas infrastructure in the direction of the provisions The European Green Deal and other European legislative provisions in the field.

The memorandum provides for punctual collaboration on several coordinates and emphasizes the companies’ interest in developing new directions of cooperation by identifying and engaging in projects of common interest, in order to develop and transform the natural gas transport and distribution infrastructure to serve consumers in the long term with energy without polluting emissions.

“SNTGN Transgaz has always been at the vanguard of Romania’s energy security development. We achieved this through the interconnection projects, through the partnerships concluded, through the SNT developments. We have long been aware of the implications that the European Green Deal and new fuels will have on the European energy sector. That is why we decided to conclude this collaboration partnership with E.ON, because together we can generate the symbiosis that strengthens Romania’s energy security. Transgaz has proven that it is capable of implementing complex investment projects of major importance, under conditions of economic efficiency and operational safety. Through future projects, we will continue our assumed mission with the same responsibility for performance, competitiveness and sustainable development of the Romanian energy sector,” said Ion Sterian, general manager of Transgaz.

“We want to bring the know-how that the E.ON group has at the European level together with that of Transgaz for the development of technologies and a resilient national infrastructure, prepared for the challenges of the future. Together with the existing natural gas infrastructure, the transition to clean energy can be much more cost-effective, and the benefits for strengthening long-term energy security are obvious,” said Volker Raffel, CEO, E.ON Romania.

Defining a joint action plan to strengthen and expand natural gas infrastructure in line with the strategic decision to consider natural gas as a transition fuel and accelerating research into the role that national natural gas infrastructure plays in accommodating green gas and, in particular of hydrogen, through the exchange of information of interest, are two of the objectives targeted by the document.

Other directions are the development of joint proposals to ANRE for the issuance of specific technical regulations in the field of hydrogen and fuel gas mixtures and the establishment of criteria for the development of the infrastructure dedicated to hydrogen on the territory of Romania, in order to define the future transport and distribution corridors.
