In 2017, 262 million cars were registered in the European Union, of which about two million (0.8%) were electric or hybrid vehicles that could be driven in combination with a gasoline or diesel engine, according to data from the European Statistics Office Eurostat).
In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles in the EU Member States. In particular, the number of hybrids with a gasoline engine and an electric motor in 2017 (1.5 million) was almost seven times higher than in 2013 (0.2 million).
Among the Member States for which data are available, there are five countries where more than 1% of the vehicles registered in 2017 were electric or hybrid: Sweden (2.4%), Poland (1.9%), United Kingdom , 5%), France (1.4%) and Belgium (1.2%), according to green-report.ro.
In eight countries, less than 1% of the registered vehicles were electric or hybrid: Luxembourg, Finland, Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Spain, Lithuania and Portugal.
