Ukraine’s power grid is receiving emergency assistance from Poland, Romania and Slovakia after a wave of Russian airstrikes damaged power facilities and left more than a million people without power, Ukraine’s electricity grid operator Ukrenergo announced, Reuters reports.

The operator of the transmission network of electricity in Poland (PSE) is helping the counterpart in Ukraine by supplying a quantity of electricity 300 Megawatts between 06.00 GMT – 11.00 GMT, PSE stated, quoted by Agerpres.

“Subsequently, the deliveries will depend on the needs in our system and our ability to help them,” said the PSE spokesperson, Maciej Wapinski.

The European Union and Ukraine linked their electricity grids in March 2022, shortly afer the Russian invasion began, allowing Ukraine to receive emergency electricity from Europe if military attacks damage facilities Ukrainian.

Russia launched about 90 missiles and 60 explosive drones on Ukraine during the night from Thursday to Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced, this being one of the most massive Russian attacks in recent months.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said this was the biggest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent times. “The goal is not just to damage, but to try again, just like last year, to cause a large-scale failure of the country’s energy system,” he wrote on Facebook.
