Unit 1 of CNE Cernavodă was resynchronized to the National Energy System on Saturday afternoon following the completion of the works related to the planned shutdown, announced SN Nuclearelectrica SA.
Unit 1 entered the planned shutdown program on May 19, 2024, in order to carry out maintenance work, carried out once every two years for each unit.
According to Nuclearelectrica, during the planned shutdown, activities from the following programs were carried out: the preventive maintenance program; corrective maintenance program; the inspection program; the mandatory testing program during the planned shutdowns; the project change implementation program.

Unit 1 of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant (CNE), with an installed capacity of 700 MW, was put into operation in 1996 and has delivered, until now, 133 million MWh, representing 9% of national consumption, over a period of 26 years. Unit 1 also prevented the release of 130 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Nuclearelectrica is the national electricity, thermal and nuclear fuel company in Romania, which operates under the authority of the Ministry of Energy, the Romanian state holding 82.49% of the shares, and the other shareholders 17.50%, after the company was listed on the stock exchange in 2013. it contributes over 18% of nuclear energy to the total energy production and 33% to the total CO2-free energy production in Romania.
The CNE Cernavodă branch (CNE) operates two CANDU nuclear units, being two of the most performing units among the more than 400 nuclear power plants in the world, a nuclear fuel factory and achieved the integrated fuel cycle by acquiring a concentrate processing line uranium to support the company’s long-term investment projects.
