US President Joe Biden has announced a ban on imports of oil and energy from Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine, stressing strong bipartisan support for the decision, which he acknowledged could lead to rising energy prices in the US.

“We ban all imports of energy from Russian oil and gas,” Joe Biden told reporters at the White House.

“This means that Russian oil will no longer be acceptable in American ports, and the American people will deal another blow to Putin’s war machine.”

Oil prices rose after the president’s announcement, with Brent crude oil for May rising 5.4 percent to $129.91 a barrel.

President Biden has cooperated with allies in Europe, which are more dependent on Russian oil, to isolate Russia’s economy and Vladimir Putin, according to Rador.

The United Kingdom announced shortly before Mr Biden’s statement that it would phase out imports of Russian oil and gas by the end of 2022.

President Biden said sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies had already caused Russia’s economy to collapse.

He added that the latest decisions were taken in close consultation with allies and partners around the world.

The U.S. has imported an average of more than 20.4 million barrels of crude oil and refined products from Russia in 2021, about 8 percent of U.S. liquid fuel imports, according to the Energy Information Administration, and the ban is expected to boost already high gasoline prices, amid rising inflation.

The United States also imports a negligible amount of coal from Russia.
