ENERGYNOMICS MAGAZINE ONLINE

184 pages of interviews, analysis and opinions, fully bilingual, are now available for all interested in the present situation of the Romanian energy industry. The printed edition will also be delivered in the next few weeks and we will make sure it will reach, as it has been doing since December 2013, professionals in the energy industry in Romania, the managers of the most active companies and officials from regulatory authorities with responsibilities in the energy sector.

For them, we address key topics in the Romanian energy sector, such as the green transition and the need for sustainable industrialisation, economic opportunities from Ukraine’s reconstruction, energy market liberalisation, energy security and investment in renewables. We analyse 2025 market trends, including the impact of regulation, digitisation and energy storage. We also present major investment projects and technological innovation, along with the prospects for international energy collaboration.

Some ideas

Distribuție Energie Electrică România (DEER), the country’s largest energy distribution operator, has set out a wide-ranging investment plan for the period 2025-2029. Major objectives include digitalization of the grids, modernisation of infrastructure and ensuring a higher quality of service for consumers. “Investments are essential to ensure a modern, secure and sustainable energy system,” DEER CEO Mihaela Suciu told us, pointing out that a significant part of the funding comes from the Modernisation Fund, where DEER has secured more than 500 million euros for key projects. The company is also committed to minimising network losses, combating energy theft and implementing smart grid control solutions.

Volker Raffel, CEO of E.ON Romania, draws attention to the need for a rapid and efficient liberalisation of the energy market to avoid a chain crisis. State interventions in the energy market through capping schemes have disrupted natural market mechanisms and companies are still waiting for repayment of outstanding amounts. According to Raffel, regulatory uncertainty has made generators reluctant to offer large volumes of post-cap energy, leading to high prices and an unpredictable market. In addition, Romania needs to avoid another episode of hasty liberalisation, as has happened in the past, and allow the formation of viable long-term offers. “As I have said before and I repeat now: the market needs to open early. At the latest now for July 2025 and also already for gas after April 2026”, insists Volker Raffel.

DRI, the renewable energy division of the DTEK Group, is accelerating investments in Romania and Central and Eastern Europe, with 1.4 GW already in operation and development. “Rapid expansion is key to meeting growing demand and staying competitive,” DRI CEO Ivan Geliukh told us. In Romania, the company has successfully implemented one of the largest PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) with OMV, covering 100 GWh annually for a period of 8.5 years. DRI finalised Romania’s first wind farm in a decade, a 60 MW project in Ruginoasa, and continues to develop renewable capacity with another 126 MW under construction. The company emphasises that it is essential for the Romanian PPA market to become more liquid in order to facilitate the attraction of new investments.

Decision-makers, experts and managers are also featured in the new edition of Energynomics Magazine. Among them Jürgen Ludwig, REPOM * Dan Prodan, Vienna Energy * Cosmin Ghiță, Nuclearelectrica * Dragoș Gavriluță, Green Tech International, Daniel Apostol, FPE, Laurențiu Urluescu, AFEER, Peter Stohr, Premier Energy Group, Alexandra Floricică, ProCredit Bank, Zsuzsa Bereschi, EY Romania, Mihai Necula, Naxxar Energy Romania, Olivian Savin, Nano Energies, Ioannis Kalapodas, European Energy, Claudiu Crețu, ELCEN.
